Bernards Township is a snapshot of everything that is desirable about Somerset County: a well-to-do small town in a serene country setting. It's less than an hour from New York City. It features nationally recognized schools, and it's home to the upwardly mobile and some of the country's biggest companies alike.

As a Somerset County Township, the taxes in Bernards are lower than nearby Union or Morris. This business-friendly area is home to the corporate HQs of Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, Fedders, Hitachi Power Systems USA, and Verizon Wireless. Per capita township income, not surprisingly, is high at around $100,000. The school system has gotten national attention, with Ridge High School consistently ranked in the top ten in New Jersey and the top 200 in the United States in 2009 by US News & World Reports.

The township's downtown area on South Finley Avenue is known for cute shops, coffee places where they know how the locals like their coffee, and some notable restaurants like The Washington House. There's also a 600-year old oak tree in the courtyard of the First Presbyterian Church, the oldest of its kind in North America. And for anyone who enjoys equestrian events, the Lord Stirling Stable is the place to be, featuring rides around the stables for beginners and experienced riders alike.

As 2017 kicks off, a new mayor of Bernards Township has been sworn in. Carolyn Gaziano was officially appointed as mayor during a Bernards Township Committee meeting the first week of January. Mayor Gaziano has pledged to continue the policies that have made Bernards Township one of the most desirable communities to live in New Jersey. Among her stated policy objectives for 2017 are:

-Continuing the fiscal conservatism of previous administrations, focusing on the tenets of low municipal taxes, debt avoidance, and limited spending.

-Controlling the development of the township through land use ordinances in a way that preserves its rural character. This includes the ongoing prohibition of neon signs and the preservation of open space between houses.

    -Redeveloping the Millington Quarry

-Launching a new Mayor's Speaker Series on Diversity, a series of lectures given by township residents of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in an ongoing effort to promote an appreciation of the township's diversity.

-Taking a photograph every day and posting it to the township website (one of her favorite hobbies is photography).

-A focus on initiating programs designed to improve mental health.

Best of luck to Mayor Gaziano and her team as they do their best to keep Bernards Township a lovely place to live in 2017 and beyond!
