This isn't your dad's barber shop. RazorSharp in Metuchen is a lively and "hip" men's haircut place where they combine time tested old world techniques with modern flair and expertise. Located at 569 Middlesex Ave, Metuchen, these guys understand their craft. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and know all the latest haircut styles from professional corporate cuts to hiphop fads. If you have kids, especially teens, they are totally in tune to giving them the personal look they want. I personally like the fact that it is one of the few places outside of NYC where you can get a real straight razor shave and hot towel treatment. After my haircut and shave I feel like a million bucks; no attention to detail spared. Nice.

As one of the state's busier transit hubs, Metuchen has had a long term goal of hosting more transit-friendly redevelopment projects. To that end, the new Pearl Street development lot is expected to be complete towards the end of summer 2017. This lot, once a commuter parking lot, will now feature a commercial and residential "town square" style meeting space in addition to a parking garage for the town to gather and enjoy.

The lot, designed by Woodmont Development, LLC, received Metuchen Borough Planning Board approval in July 2014. There will be 273 one and two bedroom housing units, 13,000 square feet of retail space, 750 parking spaces, and a half-acre public "town square" piazza. Affordable housing will be included, with 15% of units designated as affordable and the remainder offered at standard market rate for units of this size. As part of the project, pedestrian improvements will be made along the railroad that will result in a one-block connecting path between the parking garage and Metuchen Station.

For anyone interested in leasing one of the new Woodmont Metro apartments, the Leasing Office is now open and accepting entries through the end of January. Visit the office at 20 New Street for floor plans and pricing information.

Metuchen Mayor Peter Cammarano addressed the Borough Council on New Years Day with a list of projects planned for 2017. Among the work the Borough leadership will take on for this year is:

-Modernizing the Metuchen Parking Authority's technology, replacing pay meters with smartphone apps
-Improving the recruitment and retention of volunteer fire and emergency medical services staff
-Scouting a new location for the Metuchen firehouse
-Improving bike and pedestrian safety, especially downtown
-Limiting development that would change the character of Metuchen neighborhoods, including the possibility of a floor-to-area ratio ordinance to limit types and sizes of structures allowed.
-Building a new sewer pump station.
-The finishing of the Pearl Street development, which will feature a six-level parking deck, 273 one- and two-bedroom housing units, 13,000 square feet of retail space, and a half-acre public piazza.
-Improving Oakland Park, with the assistance of a $225,000 grant from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
-The opening of a new Whole Foods (to be completed in the third quarter 2017).

By all accounts, 2017 looks to be a busy and promising year for Metuchen!

Where can you find 5,500 homemade cookies? Come to Metuchen on Saturday, December 17th, from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. The Metuchen Cookie Walk started in 2015 as a holiday fundraiser for the Fuccile Foundation, which provides financial assistance to local families impacted by tragedy. The premise of the walk was simple: bake, buy, give. In 2015, local residents donated over 5,500 homemade cookies that were sold to cookie lovers at the Old Franklin Schoolhouse in Metuchen. Cookie Walk attendees can purchase a small or large box that they fill with cookies. It's fun to see how many cookies you can get in your box and still close the lid! This event is popular and was a great success in 2015. Last year, the Cookie Walk raised more than $3,400 for the Fuccile Foundation and local families in need.

Metuchen is a small town with big access to everything should just about sum things up. Access to the NJT Rail line to NYC is the #1 draw. No matter where you are in town the train is easily accessible right on Main Street.

Speaking of Main Street, the town is host to the areas most fabulous restaurants and shopping, while keeping that friendly vibe Metuchen is famous for. Check out Mangia Toscano for fine Italian foods and baked goods, or Phattra Thai Restaurant, or some great Irish fair at Hailey's Harp & Pub and so much more. Need to pick up something special for someone? Pop into the Jewel Shop; you never know what you will find.

Obviously living here is awesome, but I should note having two children go through the school system, I could not be happier with the quality of their education. There is a real sense of community in Metuchen and everyone is welcomed to participate in as much or little as they want to or their lives will allow. This is a beautiful historic town where you can walk your dog down wide sleepy streets or take a late night stroll down Main Street with your sweetheart to catch some local entertainment. Metuchen has it all and you have only to spend some time here to take it all in and fall in love.

When you think of Metuchen you think of Main Street; well most people do. Did you know there is another part of Metuchen that has a hidden treasure? Yup, I'm talking about Central Avenue! There are lots of little small businesses that are thriving because Metuchenite's know how great they are, and Joey D's Pizza is one of them.

If you want spectacular NY style Pizza you must pay them a visit. Owner Joey and staff are friendly and accommodate you and your pizza whims. Try the Grandma pie or the Margherita style Sicilian, my personal favorite. Stop by for lunch and get a cold sub. They do full Italian dinners too, not just pizza. No longer do I have to travel to Staten Island for great Italian food, I have that right here in good ol' Metuchen, my home town.

Metuchen and its surrounding area offers lots of annual events to get out and enjoy the community. There's something for everybody. Here are some great examples.

The "Talk of the Town" event is the Metuchen Farmers Market, held on Saturdays from June to November. This event features delicious creations from local grocery vendors like Cherry Grove Farm, Hoboken Farm Stand, the Raritan Bakery, and Stonybrook Meadows Farm. The market is from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Metuchen Senior Center parking lot at the intersection of New Street and Center Street. Have a look (and taste) of some of the area's best fresh produce and baked goods.

There's something about warm weather that brings out the car enthusiasts, and downtown Metuchen hosts Cruise Nights on the first Wednesday of May through September. Main Street turns into a car show where visitors can vote on their favorite car, whether it's a classic muscle car or a custom new ride. Also in May, there's a golf outing at the lovely Metuchen Country Club for those with a love for the links (and free prizes). If you're an art enthusiast, look for the ArtFest every Friday night in June for live music and open air exhibits that really liven up downtown Metuchen!

When the weather turns cool, it's time for the Fall Country Fair held in October that features dozens of local vendors (with tons of food) and thousands of visitors. The whole downtown shuts down from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for the fair. There's an annual Halloween Parade and "Trunk & Treat" event. This is a spin on trick-or-treating where visitors park their cars and offer candy to the parade passing by. And when it's time for the holidays, the annual Winter Festival Parade brings out the bands, floats, and Metuchen's finest for a parade down Main Street to celebrate the season.

Metuchen is one of those growing central Jersey towns that has a touch of city life nestled within cozy suburbs. The downtown Metuchen business district is an easy walk onto Main Street from the train station. It features everything from classy spas to the proverbial corner bookstore.

A great downtown has to start with great food, and there's something for every taste in downtown Metuchen. For classic lunch fare, try Hailey's Harp & Pub or Mimi's for contemporary southeast American (and Asian) cuisines. Craving something spicier? Go with the Mariachi Mexican restaurant. For those seeking an international dining experience, there's Cafe Vaaza (cuisine of Kashmir), Peruvian international cuisine (on New Street, right off of Main), and the Empire Asian Fusion & Sushi bar. For a kosher option, look to The Orchid restaurant (they also cater). If you're craving a pastry or doughnut, the Buttery Bake Shoppe is the place to be (and makes an apple turnover to die for). And no restaurant row would be complete without the cute local coffee place; Metuchen's aptly named Brewed Awakening pairs their impressive coffee menu with breakfast and lunch sandwiches (the prosciutto is can't-miss!)

If you're in the mood for some pampering (and who ever isn't), look to the Appearance Plus Day Spa, Luigi's men's styling shop, or Suite Beverly Salon Boutique for an upscale experience. There's even a pet spa, the adorable Barkingham Palace, that's got rave reviews on Yelp! All that sparkles can be found in A & J Jewelers and The Jewel Shop. Stop by the Brass Lantern for an eclectic assortment of antiques and the Bookstore Boutique for that afternoon read on those rainy fall days. There's also an art studio and gallery, Creative Images, right near the train station if you have an eye for the visual arts. If you're in the area on business, the downtown area features a notary, law and financial offices, a UPS store, and a travel agency.

Everything is within a half mile from the Metuchen train station. There is even taxi service right off the platform. If you're considering moving to this area, it's worth making a day of it to experience what downtown Metuchen has to offer.
