Beaches! That's what it's all about right? Which one? Where should we go? How about life guards? Handicap access? Dog friendly? Crowded location near the stores, shops and restaurants or away from the maddening crowds? Fishing, surfing or swimming? We have them all.

So first things first. Beach tags are required on Cape May and Cape May Point Beaches. Tags pay for lifeguards and cleaning the beaches which makes them safe and family-friendly. Cape May and Cape May Point beaches are guarded but it is always good to make sure you see the stand up and ready before entering the water from 10:00 am - 5:30 pm. They also display flags that give you the condition of the ocean.

Cape May beaches that are in the center of town are the most active - running from Grant Street through Jefferson Avenue - with easy access to food and shops. The west end of town from the Cove (which features a surfing beach) through Grant Street is also family-friendly, with sandy bottom beaches and easy access to dining and entertainment. The east end of town features beaches that are not as crowded. Queen Street has an area for surfing, from Madison to Trenton there are restaurants and entertainment, and Brooklyn is a fishing beach. The Poverty Beach areas from Pittsburgh to Poverty are non-commercial, quiet and relaxing.

Restrooms are positioned along Beach Avenue for convenience as are rinse stations. Metered parking is in most areas of beach access - so remember your quarters! Chair, umbrella, boogy boards, surfboards and tents rentals are also available along the beach from Steger's Beach Service or if your staying at a hotel that features that amenity. Handicap areas are installed all along Beach Drive also and the tag monies have provided new handicap chairs to accommodate your needs while having a great day at the beach.

Free beaches are located in the Lower Township areas of Sunset Beach and Higbee Beach if you stay on the island. You can also bring your pet for a swim but make sure you have a leash and do-bag (mandatory). These beaches are not guarded, very natural and we wish to keep them that way - so please pick up when leaving. Great for collecting Cape May diamonds and seaglass, fishing, kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding too! Life is good at the beach and it's great in Cape May!
