The International Baccalaureate (IB) Art Class showcased their works of art in Asbury Park at Salt Studios. The artworks ranged from painting to sculpture, photography and short film. It was quite impressive to see teenagers' works of art displayed in such a professional manner, just like an art gallery. The IB Art class is always one of the students' favorite classes, as there is so much freedom for them to explore a theme that is important to them. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of work! They do research and keep an art journal, in addition to creating the art. Thoroughly impressive! It is, or should be, one of the highlighted features of Shore Regional High School. I highly recommend anyone's child to pursue this art class if not the entire IB program.

Last night was opening night for the high school's production of "Annie". In a word - fantastic! For a group of teenagers, it was very professional, from the set design, the singing, and the acting, all facets were impressive. Now, we saw the production of Grease last year and I wasn't as glowing about that one. There were some of the same actors but I guess this years group just really puts on a quality performance. We will definitely make plans to see their performance next fall. For a school that puts a lot of emphasis on athletics, it is nice to see the arts standing just as strong.

As relative newcomers to West Long Branch and the Shore Regional District, this was our first Fashion Show. In West Long Branch, the PTA has a tradition of sponsoring an 8th grade Fashion Show as a fundraiser with a gift basket auction and to showcase the graduating 8th graders. My oldest started in 9th grade so the SRHS senior Fashion Show is our first experience.

Again, I am amazed and have so much respect for the people (mostly Moms) who decorated, who put out invitations, who organized the event, who dressed up the gymnasium to look just like a fashion show runway. The food left something to be desired as it was mostly salads and sandwiches, but thats okay - it's to raise money for the senior class to have fun after senior prom. With over 100 gift baskets to bid for, but with over 300 people, the odds seemed good to win a basket. And as luck would have it we did! There were many others though who didn't win anything.

Last, but not least, my daughter dressed up in a tennis outfit with two of her friends, on loan from Sport Spot. Even though she doesn't play tennis, she looked like a great tennis player! She was so cute, looking a bit embarrassed to be up there on the runway in front of so many people but she had the biggest smile on her face.

Although some may think this Fashion Show thing that goes on down here is maybe a little strange, I'm happy my daughter was able to participate in something she will probably never do again in her life. So beautiful my girl! What a great Sunday!

Turns out it wasn't that bad. Only about 6-8 inches. They probably could have gone to school for the entire day but good that they had Tuesday off. Back to school tomorrow!

The first big snow storm of 2015 is just starting but schools have been closed since lunchtime today. This afternoon the main roads were still easily passable while the in-town roads were beginning to have some snow on them. We've all been safely inside our house since 2:30pm. Thanks to all the mail carriers who walked the streets to bring the mail. We probably won't be getting mail tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all the snow that is forecast to arrive overnight and into tomorrow, won't be as bad as they say and that we'll be able to shovel ourselves out before Wednesday!

Shore Regional High School and its town's elementary and middle schools (West Long Branch and Oceanport) have developed apps! The app contains most of the information found on the websites like information for parents and a comprehensive calendar of events. But personally, I love this idea because now I don't have to do a google search on my phone for the school's website to find out whats going on when I'm not in front the computer. Fantastic!

My family and I are relatively new to the area, having moved to West Long Branch in 2011. We chose to move here and a big part of our decision making process involved the schools our kids would be attending. In 2011, my oldest daughter would be entering high school. I did a lot of research of Monmouth County high schools to help us decide where to live, such as Long Branch High School and Red Bank Regional High School. No school is perfect but Shore Regional High School (SRHS) is a great best of all worlds, in my opinion. It's small, only about 700 students total for 9th-12th grade. For some its size would be a problem but we love it.

Despite its small size, SRHS still offers big opportunities. For instance, there are several athletic teams to participate in for both boys and girls throughout the school year. And to try something new is ok! For instance, my daughter hadn't played basketball but she wanted to play her freshman year or be on the freshman team. She was not discouraged from doing so and she got to play, for at least a couple of minutes, every game. There is also an active musical theater program, the Shore Players, who put on two musicals each year. There's also chorus, band and a marching band. Plus some amazing art classes spanning the range from painting to digital art. And so much more! I didn't even begin to talk about academics. Consider this to be part one of a several part series highlighting the special attributes of Shore Regional High School.
