Winter storm Stella cripples commutes in NJ. State of Emergency declared in New Jersey by the Governor, although there are no driving restrictions. Hackettstown snow totals are not as high as originally predicted, but road ways are still treacherous. Winds gusts up to 60 mph pound the area while the snow turned to three inches of pelting sleet and then back to snow again. All Hackettstown schools, sending districts and surrounding towns remained closed. All state offices were closed as well.

Avoid a $50 fine from Hackettstown Sidewalk Care and Maintenance. Casting snow into the streets could also result in a $100 fine. Owners and tenants must clear all snow on sidewalks in front of residences and business. When a snow emergency is in effect, in Hackettstown, there is no parking on any streets. Avoid having your vehicle towed.

Every Tuesday since 1940, Hackettstown has been home to the livestock auction and market. I remember buying calves and hay here when I was a small child in the 1960's, numbers being rattled off, waving fingers from the crowd, then the gavel smashes and “sold” yells the auctioneer. The Hackettstown Live Stock Co-Op is located toward the end of West Stiger Street.

Hackettstown Farmers Auction Market is the only livestock auction in operation in New Jersey today. Every Tuesday the auction market sells cattle, calves, sheep, lambs, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea hens and at times emus and llamas. In addition to livestock auctioned, is fresh hay, straw, grains and firewood, and they also sell eggs. During the spring, summer and autumn months you can buy flats of flowers and tomatoes, fresh vegetables and jarred goods along with pumpkins and mums for sale, just to mention a few.

Although some things have changed, for the most part it is the same. The large white and blue building which houses the auditorium is where the animals are showcased for auction. The indoor and outdoor holding pens are attached behind. On the other side of the street are more buildings that house the smaller animals for the Hackettstown Farmers Market. Stop on by, we will see you there.

There are two amazing Craft Beer Breweries that have brought much attention to Hackettstown. Czig Meisters Brewing Company and Manskirt Brewing Company are only a block apart, giving you the ease and convenience to enjoy both within a few minutes’ walk.

Czig Meisters is located at 106 Vail Street in the former Hackettstown Ford Building which was originally Kneckel Ford. Completely transformed, the atmosphere here is very festive and relaxing, along with the enjoyment of an outdoor beer garden.

Man Skirt “No Pants Just Good Beer” is located at 144 Main Street, which is on the corner of Main Street and Grand Avenue in beautiful Hackettstown, formerly the United Jersey Bank. Here there is a tasting room to try all the current batches.

Hackettstown is no stranger to the art of beer brewing. Along the Morris Canal at the foot of Buck Hill was the Harvey Brewery Company, which operated from 1835 until 1880's. The building itself has since been demolished, but it is known that the storage vaults still exits. Harvey Brewery was known for bottling beer, soda pop and mineral water and was later bought and operated by the Gardner and Mitchell Brewing and Bottling Company of Hackettstown NJ.

Tucked away in historic Hackettstown, NJ lies one of the finest Liberal Arts Colleges in America. Centenary College was founded in the mid-1800's and was an all female school for most of its history. Centenary became co-ed in 1988 and is the only college in Northwest NJ to award Bachelor and Masters Degrees. It is also home to the Lackland Performing Arts Center, a vibrant part of the Warren County's Cultural Activities, which boasts over 60,000 square feet of space for a variety of musical events and plays.

Being an alum makes my opinion rather skewed, but I find Centenary's architecture and grounds to be some of the most scenic in regards to institutes of higher learning in New Jersey. The college opens it's doors year round to local residents to utilize its pool, library, athletic fields and also during emergencies such as Hurricane Sandy. The rich history of Centenary truly enriches the surrounding community in the Hackettstown area.
